About the certificate

The Goethe-Zertifikat is the German language certificate awarded by the Goethe-Institut, Germany’s cultural institute. It runs across the full CEFR scale and is recognised internationally, which makes it the common choice for people sitting a German exam outside Germany.

Students applying to German universities, professionals proving a level to an employer, and anyone who wants a certificate that travels. The exams test reading, listening, writing and speaking rather than grammar in isolation.

For exam dates, fees, formats and registration, go to the Goethe-Institut. Those details change by country and year, so this page does not restate them.

One app per level

Rehearse the Goethe paper.

Each of these rebuilds the format of a single Goethe level, so the shape of the exam is familiar before you sit it.

Across the levels

Goethe vocabulary.

Word lists and flashcards spanning several levels at once — the part of German preparation that rewards daily repetition rather than a study session.

The scale

What each German level means.

Goethe certificates are graded on the CEFR, the same six-level scale used across European language exams. Here is what the levels covered by these apps actually describe.

A1Breakthrough
You can handle everyday phrases and very basic expressions: introducing yourself, saying where you live, asking simple questions about familiar things. Conversation works when the other person speaks slowly and helps you along. Practise A1 in Goethe A1.
A2Waystage
You can deal with routine situations — shopping, appointments, directions, work basics — and describe your background and immediate surroundings in simple terms. Exchanges are short but no longer need much help. Practise A2 in Goethe A2.
B1Threshold
You can cope with most situations that come up while travelling, follow the main points of clear standard speech on familiar topics, and produce connected text about things that interest you. This is the level most residency and work requirements ask for. Practise B1 in Goethe B1.

These are independent study apps built by Melih Firat. They are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Goethe-Institut, and they do not issue certificates.
