About the certificate
telc is a German examination board that awards language certificates across the CEFR scale, from A1 through C2. Its German exams are widely recognised inside Germany, and the certificates are standardised — the same level means the same thing wherever you sit it.
Most people meet telc because something requires it: a residence application, a job, a university place, or an integration course. That usually means a fixed date and limited time, which is a different problem from learning German in general.
For exam dates, fees, formats and registration, go to telc gGmbH. Those details change by country and year, so this page does not restate them.

The scale
What each German level means.
telc certificates are graded on the CEFR, the same six-level scale used across European language exams. Here is what the levels covered by these apps actually describe.
- A1Breakthrough
- You can handle everyday phrases and very basic expressions: introducing yourself, saying where you live, asking simple questions about familiar things. Conversation works when the other person speaks slowly and helps you along. Practise A1 in telc A1.
- A2Waystage
- You can deal with routine situations — shopping, appointments, directions, work basics — and describe your background and immediate surroundings in simple terms. Exchanges are short but no longer need much help. Practise A2 in telc A2.
- B1Threshold
- You can cope with most situations that come up while travelling, follow the main points of clear standard speech on familiar topics, and produce connected text about things that interest you. This is the level most residency and work requirements ask for.
