About the certificate
IELTS is an English language test reported on a band score rather than a pass or fail. It tests listening, reading, writing and speaking, and is accepted for study, work and migration in the English-speaking world.
University applicants, migrants and professionals working to a specific band requirement. Because the score is a band rather than a level, vocabulary breadth tends to decide the outcome more than anything else.
For exam dates, fees, formats and registration, go to the British Council, IDP and Cambridge Assessment English. Those details change by country and year, so this page does not restate them.

IELTS vocabulary.
Word lists and flashcards spanning several levels at once — the part of English preparation that rewards daily repetition rather than a study session.
The scale
What each English level means.
IELTS certificates are graded on the CEFR, the same six-level scale used across European language exams. Here is what the levels covered by these apps actually describe.
- A1Breakthrough
- You can handle everyday phrases and very basic expressions: introducing yourself, saying where you live, asking simple questions about familiar things. Conversation works when the other person speaks slowly and helps you along.
- A2Waystage
- You can deal with routine situations — shopping, appointments, directions, work basics — and describe your background and immediate surroundings in simple terms. Exchanges are short but no longer need much help.
- B1Threshold
- You can cope with most situations that come up while travelling, follow the main points of clear standard speech on familiar topics, and produce connected text about things that interest you. This is the level most residency and work requirements ask for.
- B2Vantage
- You can follow complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, hold a fluent, spontaneous conversation with a native speaker without strain on either side, and argue a position in detail.
- C1Effective operational proficiency
- You can understand demanding, longer texts and pick up implicit meaning, express yourself fluently without obviously searching for words, and use the language flexibly for academic and professional purposes.
- C2Mastery
- You can understand virtually everything you hear or read, summarise from several sources into a coherent account, and express yourself precisely even in complex situations.
